Updated: Feb 9

As if moms don't have enough going on, often they're given the unofficial job title of "Family Photographer" - along with a million others. What I've learned is that capturing those candid moments doesn’t need to be complicated.

Whether you’re using a professional camera or your smartphone, the right techniques and tools can help you take stunning photos at home. Here are some simple tips for parents looking to preserve memories with great photos!

1. Natural Lighting is Your Best Friend

The best light for photography is natural light! The soft, diffused glow of sunlight creates flattering photos without harsh shadows or overexposure. Position your kids near windows during the day when sunlight is abundant for the best results.

Tip: If you don't have great natural light, try shooting during "golden hour" (an hour before sunset or just after sunrise) for soft, warm light. Avoid using your phone’s flash—it can create harsh shadows and unnatural colors.

If you need more control over your lighting, a softbox lighting kit can help you replicate natural light indoors.

2. Use Simple Backgrounds

Keep the background simple to ensure your child stands out. A clean, uncluttered background will highlight the subject and make your photos look more professional.

Tip: Use neutral walls or a sheet or blanket as a backdrop.

A portable backdrop kit is great for easy setup in any room. I use this one from Amazon. The best thing about it is how easy it is to set up. It comes in two sizes and four colors: blue, green, white, and black.

3. Capture Candid Moments

Some of the best photos of kids are the unscripted, candid shots. I do feel kind of bad about including this picture in this blog, but honestly, it's art. Of course, I comforted her.

This photo tells a story.

The snow. The tears. Her brother standing in the background.

Instead of always asking them to pose, just let them play. You're bound to capture more natural memories like this one above.

Tip: Focus on action shots, whether it’s your child running, jumping, or just looking around curiously. Be ready to snap that pic!

The MOST important tip of all

Taking great photos of your kids at home doesn’t require fancy equipment—just a little creativity and a lot of patience. Keep it fun, relaxed, and natural, and you’ll end up with images that truly capture their personality. And sometimes? The best moments are the ones you simply enjoy without the lens.

Which of these tips are you excited to try? Let me know in the comments!
